Q：なぜ人々は Wikipedia にそこまで居心地悪く感じるのか？そして Google は？そして、なんていうか、その blog 全体は どう？
A: なぜならそれらのシステムは、蓋然的（確率的）統計という異質なロジックに支えられているから。それはマクロスケールに最適化されているために、ミクロスケールでは完璧さを犠牲にするというものだ。

A: その通り。我々の脳は統計学や確率論として考えるようには出来てはいないのだ。我々は百科事典の記事が正しいかどうかを知りたい。我々は Google の結果に、賢者の導き（理想的には人間であって欲しいが）があるかどうかを知りたい。我々は読んだものを信用したいのだ。
編集者や学者やジャーナリストが専門家が全てを取り仕切っていた時代では、少なくとも彼らが責任のある物事として、我々は彼らの仕事を正確であると思っていた。しかし現在では、誰も責任を持たないシステムにより深く依存するようになっている。知性は詰まるところ切迫した (Emergent) 状況なのだ。先に挙げた蓋然的（確率的）システムは完璧ではない。しかしそれは、時間や巨大な母数により優秀になるよう、統計的に最適化されているのだ。拡大するように設計されていて、大きさに応じて改善される。ミクロに存在する小さないい加減さは、マクロな効率の代償である。
しかし、こんなにも間違っていると思えることが、どうすれば正しくなれるのか？
困難はある。この二律背反さは、人々にとって理解するのが相当難しい。未だに Darwin の進化理論について議論がかわされるのには理由はある。たとえば Jim Suroweicki による Adam Smith の神の見えざる手について書いた本が、偉大なスコットランド人（訳注：Adam Smith のこと。）の死後 200年もの後にまだ、驚きに満ちていて（そして書かれることが必要とされて）いるのにも理由がある。市場経済と生物の進化は蓋然的（確率的）システムで、我々の哺乳類的脳からすると直感に反するのだ。極僅かな優れた人間が、そのシステムに気がつき、その洞察を用いて、近代社会の礎である株式市場からGoogle までを作り上げたという事実は、我々の知的ソフトウェアの進化が我々の（肉体という）ハードウェアより早く進化するという証拠である。
蓋然（確率）に基づくシステムは、Kevin Kelly の云う所の、“手が付けられない”。その名を冠した彼の素晴らしい本では、たくさんの例に注目し、民主主義から鳥の群集まで、混沌の中から秩序が見いだされるところ、エントロピーの矢印とは全く逆のように見える。此の本は12年以上前のものだが、今から10年以上の後も我々は、洞察に満ちた驚きを発見するだろう。これは正しいのだ。
Wikipedia は“権威的”か？多分違う。じゃぁホントの所、何なのだろう？例えば Britannica は非常に高い学位を持った数人の評者によって審理されている。（もしあるならば）まったくのデタラメやデッチ上げは間違いなく Wikipedia より少ないだろう。しかし絶対に正しいということもない。実際の所、我々が信用している以上に Britannica にも不備はあるのだ。
Britannica の最大の間違いは、委任（訳注：評者に対する読者側の価値判断に関してか？）ではなく、省かれることである。Britannica のいくつかの部門では浅く、時代遅れな記述もいくらかある。そして何百万もの事柄について、ただ、載せていない。それはその編集プロセスを鑑みれば明らかに不可能なのだ。しかし Wikipedia にはそれが出来る。それら Britannica が扱わなかったことだけでなくそれ以上含めることができる。今日 Wikipedia は英語版で 860,000 本の記事がある。比べるところ Britannica は 80,000 本、Encarta では 4,500 本である。明日にはさらに隔たりは広がるだろう。
蓋然的（確率的）システムのいい所は集合知の利であり、結果として、その幅広さ/深さの両面に於いて上手に拡大可能なのだ。しかし集合知はミクロスケールで完璧な確実さを犠牲にしていることにより、利用者は全ての記事について懐疑的でなければならない。Wikipedia は、“最初の一歩には相応しいが、最終確認とすべきではない。ここは探索すべき情報の島で、完璧な事実の源ではないのだ”。
此れと同じことが blog にも云える。どれ一つとして権威的なものは無い。以前の記事で私が述べたように、“blog は Long Tail である。そしてその品質や Long Tail の中身を一般化するのは常に間違いである。つまり、定義に於いて、変数は多様なのだ”。しかし集合的に、blog は主流メディアに等しい以上の関係であることがわかった。読者は、ニュースを理解する前に、他の意見も読んでみたいだけなのだ。
全知且つ不可解にも見える Google も同様である。あなたや私が見つけるかもしれないが、見つけないかもしれない関係を、Google は作っている。なぜならその関係は我々の理解の及ばない規模の数値計算から、自然とわき上がってくるのだ。異論のあるところではあるが、異質な知性である巨大な統計を、その DNA に直結させて生まれてきた最初の会社が Google なのだ。だからこれだけ成功している。そしてその成功は留まる所を知らないようにみえる。
Paul Graham がうまいことを云っている。
“Web にはもともとある種の粒度があって、Google はそれを位置合わせしたのだ。だからこそ彼らの成功は何もしていないように見える。印刷業界や、出る杭を打とうと顧客相手に訴訟を起こす Microsoft やレコード会社のように、凪に停泊してビジネスモデルに祈っているのではなく、Google は風に帆走している。Google は彼らのやり方でコトを無理矢理起こそとはしていない。彼らは何が起ころうとしているのかを理解しようとしているのだ。そして、それが起こる時、そこにいるように準備している。”
Web はアイデアを扱う究極の市場だ。そこでは数がものをいう。その Graham の見る粒というのは、統計の力学の編みの目であり、本当に大きいシステムが理解する唯一の論理である。おそらく、我々も理解できる日がくるであろう。
