今日は Martin Luther King Jr. の誕生日をお祝いする日 で、多くの学校/機関はお休みになります。正確には 1929年 1月 15日 が誕生日なのですが（現在まで生きていたら 76歳。まだ現役かもしれません）、まぁそこはアメリカ人の合理主義の事。1月の第三月曜日、と movable feast （移動祝祭日）になっています。暗殺されたのが 1968年ですから、亡くなったのが 39歳の時、それから 37年、アメリカと黒人を巡る状況は変わったのでしょうか。

先日この日が休みかどうか友人たちで話していた時、口の悪い Daniel は “Columbus Day はもう全員は休みじゃないけど、Martin Luther King は黒人だし休みだろうよ”なんて（あまり PC な発言ではないけれど、まぁ趣味の悪い冗談なんで許してあげて下さい）。正確には Columbus Day は Native American に対してはある意味攻撃的で不快であり、Martin Luther King Day は公民権という社会正義のためだから全員が祝えるわけです（KKK に対しては Offensive かもしれませんけどね）。

全然関係ないですけど、蛇（じゃ）の道は蛇（へび）という格言の由来を知ってました？今日ルームメイトと話していて、どういう意味なんだ、ってなってググってみました。

同類のものにとって同じ仲間のことはすぐ分かるということ。最初の「蛇」は「じゃ」、次の「蛇」は「へび」と読む。同じ蛇でも、ちょっと種類が違う。 「じゃ」は大蛇、おろち、うわばみなど、大きなヘビの総称で、「へび」はもう少し小さい普通の蛇を指す。「蛇の道はちいさけれどもくちなわが知る」という言い方もあったようだ。くちなわはヘビの古い言い方で、「朽ちた縄」に由来するともいう。ちっぽけなヘビでも、仲間である大蛇の通り道は知っている、というわけだ。
